In 1943, the Chemical weapons Corps secretly recruited the German architect Erich Mendelsohn to work with the engineers of the RKO, who had produced Citizen Kane two years earlier.
The best scientific advisors of the allies had strongly recommended the setting up of a programme of incendiary experimentation on exact replicas of workers’ houses. And only the United States - or rather the combined powers of Hollywood and the petrol industry - were able to fulfil this mission in simply a few months.
