From off the coast of a world under reconstruction, a world fissured by thunderbolts and illusory frontiers, bleeding tears reach us from encrypted sources. This murmurs are heard as alerts A new form of code articulates itself. Cheikh Morad Djadja must go to this pay phone in order to leave his own, masked vocal message.
#31# is an experimental approach to a latent reconstruction of identity, in the form of a quest, and the exploration of a popular, libertarian North African culture, RAÏ. The auto-tuned prose (vocoder) of Cheikh Morad Djadja leads us into an existential quest, a world that is perpetually mutating, in search of a place for anonymous telecommunication. The pay phone proves the first step toward an abstract reality, allowing him to leave a voice message, about his trans-identity.
Ghyzlène Boukaila (born in Algiers) develops a multidisciplinary practice spanning film, installation and sculpture, in which immersion and transformation take centre stage.
Her films extend into sculptural or immersive installations that shift our perception of reality and open up speculative narrative spaces, at the intersection of archives, documents and fictional territories. At the heart of her research lie liminal zones—transit spaces—envisaged as active sites of memory, resistance and reconstruction. Drawing on a documentary approach, her work explores postcolonial legacies and acts of resistance. Her work has been presented at the Rencontres Paris/Berlin, the Arab World Institute and the Tampere Film Festival (Finland).
