Ryoichi Kurokawa is japanese audiovisual artist. His works take on multiple forms such as screening works, recordings, installation and live performance. Ryoichi Kurokawa composes time based sculptures with digital generated materials and field recorded sources, and the minimal and the complexities coexist there. He accepts sound and imagery as a unit not as separately, and constructs very exquisite and precise computer based works with the audiovisual language. That shortens mutual distance, the reciprocity and the synchronization of sound and visual composition. He declines vibrant and refined universes through clips, albums, installations, and performances, where glitch minimalism breaks up and re-assembles in more complex and vertiginous structures. His compositions open the gateway to an imaginary world where complexity and simplicity alternate and combine in a strange symbiosis.
For instance, his work Rheo, composed of concrete images, field recordings, and generative audio/animation, Ryoichi said "Heraclitus left the words, "Panta rhei". It means "Everything flows." The successive patterns of regularity and irregularity in the nature create the proportion of alteration and unity. It may be said that this rule reveals the essential beauty. I incorporate the organic form of nature and trace the motion and the color. Then, it reconstructs the landscape of nature that has a fluent alteration of time in the immovability with concrete images, field recordings, and generative audio/animation. And it represents symbolically the continuity of death and rebirth in this alteration. The basis of this design is a volume of human's memory where hides under unconsciousness. It is horal continuation from time immemorial and the circle of alteration. The organic module, form, structure, and dimensions of time in the alteration of nature create the beauty with some method. "Water" plays an important role in this work as a figural motif. I depict this solidity and incorporate an intercommunity of biorhythm with nature.
The composition of three screens reminds the traditional painting. The sight is rest on all directions. It enables to re that moving, the flux of time, and the expanse of space. And the sound has also the flowing time with the same process as images. It depicts the nature as sound-scape. It makes it possible to create a steric space by the surrounded sound system and to recognize the story behind it by the current. The individual memories invoke five senses and these are interacted as synesthesia.
I seek to transform the space as a device into the place where a body as medium makes a proportion with the environment. The sensitivity is connected to the intelligence and the surprise is connected to the knowledge by new optical expression. With these experiments, I intend to create the dynamism of aesthesis in a space.
He also performed live-visual for musicians such as Human Audio Sponge (ex.YMO : Sketch Show + Ryuichi Sakamoto). In recent years, Kurokawa is invited to numerous noted international festivals and museums in Europe, United-States and Asia including Tate Modern, Ars Elctronical Festival, Transmediale Festival in Berlin, Shanghai eARTS, Mutek in Montreal, TodaysArt and SONAR for concerts and exhibitions, and he continues to be an active presence on the international stage.
Kurokawa won the prestigious Golden Nica 2010 -- Prix Ars Electronica (Linz) in the category of Digital Music & Sound Art with his latest pentaptych audiovisual installation 'rheo: 5 horizons' produced by Cimatics.
